Bruno Pronsato – The Make Up The Break Up

buy The Make Up The Break Up from amazon.comOfficially listed as a single, this 7-part whopper of minimalism was originally meant to fit onto Pronsato’s Why Can’t We Be Like Us album, but he simply ran out of room. Now teased and pulled into almost 39 minutes of running length, I can’t imagine this thing any shorter. Sure, it’s repetitive, but it doesn’t feel overlong at all, and has enough surprises and sheer spellbinding moments that you’ll quickly find yourself doubling and tripling the play time.

This time out, Pronsato definitely has some things in common with the long-form work of Villalobos, but he throws a couple sweet kinks into the mix and it pays off in a big way. As always, the drum programming is crisp. I mean, it’s wicked good and seems to lope over on itself effortlessly while in places sharp snares don’t do so much as crack the momentum, but instead give it a swift kick in a well-placed spot.

Oh, and then there’s the Nico sample, which sheers through the beats about one-third of the way into the piece and really take things to the next level. It’s noisy and dissonant, and after the beats fall to the background they seem to come back even harder than before. As the cut plays out, the otherworldly vocals continue to swirl subtlety as guitar fret noise and other soft curls of noise drape like gauze over the relentless, lean rhythms.

“The Make Up The Break Up Part 4″ – Bruno Pronsato

The backside of the track is spent breaking things down (pardon the pun) in a very methodical way, stripping elements away for almost one-fourth the running length until it all ends up in a very different place from where it started. It’s a great trip, and as I mentioned above, it just begs for repeats.

Just when I thought I was tiring of this whole minimal techno business, along comes The Make Up The Break Up and really throws me for a loop. Considering it came out a couple months ago, I’m fortunate that I didn’t miss it altogether. So yeah, you shouldn’t miss it either.

    Hi Aaaron,

Glad you love this Pronsato. I always wondered whether you’d heard and enjoyed his album Why Can’t We Be like Us. Some tracks of which I think are incredible.

Enjoying the site, and looking forward to the end of year list, if you’ll be doing one. I’ve been travelling around the States for the last 4 months so haven’t caught up with any of the good stuff coming out – they’ll all have to wait till I get back to the UK next year! But reading your site has definitely whet my appetite for picking some stuff at a later date.

    All the best
